Sam Kerr joins Gotham FC following departure from Chelsea

Australian Striker Sam Kerr Signs with Gotham FC

Sam Kerr, a prominent Australian striker, has signed a contract with Gotham FC, the reigning champions of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), until 2030. The deal marks Kerr’s return to the US league after six years spent with Chelsea in England.

Kerr, who was a free agent, will play for Gotham FC through the 2030 season. She previously played for the club from 2015 to 2017 and holds the record for most goals scored in the NWSL regular season with 116 goals across all competitions.

In a statement, Kerr expressed her excitement about returning to Gotham FC, citing the club’s ambition and commitment to competing for trophies. The signing is seen as a significant coup for the NWSL, which has faced departures of several players to European leagues in recent years.

Gotham FC’s president of football operations, Yael Averbuch West, described Kerr as “one of the defining players of her generation” and a “game-changing talent.” The club is thrilled to have Kerr back on board, with West stating that the signing is a “landmark moment” for the team.

Kerr’s career has been marked by numerous achievements, including winning five Women’s Super League titles with Chelsea. She will make her debut for Gotham FC after the NWSL’s transfer window opens on July 14. The club will host the Washington Spirit on July 15 in a pre-season match in New York.
