Explosion at Russian military facility near St. Petersburg causes fatalities and damage

A Blast at Russian Military Police Facility in Sertolovo Results in Multiple Fatalities

An explosion occurred on Tuesday at a military police facility in Sertolovo, a town located north of St Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city. According to reports from local news channels and emergency services, the blast resulted in the deaths of at least three people and injured several others.

The building’s two upper floors collapsed, with large piles of debris surrounding the structure. The cause of the collapse is currently under investigation by Leningrad Governor Alexander Drozdenko. Soldiers and security forces were dispatched to the scene to assist in clearing the rubble and rescuing potential victims.

There are concerns that the building may further collapse, according to reports from Russia’s Lenta news site. The Investigative Committee has launched an investigation into a potential fire safety violation. The committee stated that preliminary findings indicate casualties as a result of the incident.

The blast occurred on the same day as scheduled talks between Russia and Ukraine in Geneva, Switzerland, which were brokered by the United States. The two-day talks are expected to take place, but expectations for a breakthrough are low due to differing positions on key territorial issues and future security guarantees.

Russia has experienced regular sabotage attacks on military bases and civilian infrastructure since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine began nearly four years ago. Gas leaks have been identified as a common cause of explosions in Soviet-era buildings in Russia.
