Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s Term Nears End Amid Tension with White House
Jerome Powell, the current chair of the United States Federal Reserve Board of Governors, will step down on May 15 after months of strained relations between the central bank and the White House. President Donald Trump has been pushing for more aggressive interest rate cuts, which has led to tension between the two parties.
Powell’s term as chair is set to end, but he will remain on the board as a governor. He was first appointed by Trump in 2018 and had previously served on the central bank’s board of governors from 2006 to 2011.
The transition comes after Trump announced that he would fire Powell if he remained at the Fed beyond the end of his term as chair. However, it is reported that Powell plans to stay on to help preserve the central bank’s independence.
Powell has consistently deflected criticism and rhetoric from the president, who had given him the nickname “Too Late Powell” due to the Fed’s hesitancy to cut rates quickly and sharply. Under his leadership, the Fed did not begin cutting interest rates until September.
Experts have praised Powell for his efforts to reclaim independence for the Federal Reserve. Professor Babak Hafezi stated that Powell has worked hard to keep the Fed as independent as possible and not be a political tool.
The transition comes amid other appointments and investigations that have raised questions about the central bank’s independence. Trump had previously fired Fed Governor Lisa Cook, appointed Stephan Miran, and made remarks suggesting he would only appoint someone who agreed with him on interest rates.
Powell has expressed concerns about the impact of political pressure on the institution’s ability to conduct monetary policy without considering political factors. His comments come as the Department of Justice investigation into renovations at the Federal Reserve’s Washington headquarters was suspended, allowing for Kevin Warsh to move forward in his nomination process.
