Italian Formula One driver Alex Zanardi has passed away at the age of 59, according to a statement released by his family through the charity he founded, Obiettivo3. The cause of death was not specified.
Zanardi, who lost both legs in an accident during a racing event, went on to become a Paralympic cycling champion and won numerous accolades for his achievements in sports. He was credited with helping to transform the perception of disability in Italy.
In 2020, Zanardi suffered another serious accident while competing in a handbike race in Tuscany, resulting in significant head injuries. Despite this, he continued to compete at the highest level and won multiple gold medals at the Paralympic Games.
Zanardi’s family has asked for support during this difficult time and has requested that their grief be respected. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Cordiano Dagnoni, head of the Italian Cycling Federation, have paid tribute to Zanardi as a “great champion” and an “extraordinary man”.
Zanardi had a successful career in Formula One, racing for Jordan, Minardi, and Lotus in the early 1990s. He also competed in the CART championship in the United States, winning the series title in 1997 and 1998.
Born on October 23, 1966, in Bologna, Italy, Zanardi is survived by his wife Daniela and son Niccolo. A minute’s silence will be observed at this weekend’s races in tribute to the athlete.
