France to Increase Nuclear Warhead Count and Lend Aircraft to European Allies

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced plans to strengthen France’s nuclear security relationship with key European allies. The initiative, dubbed “advanced deterrence,” aims to create a deeper, structured nuclear-security partnership distinct from NATO arrangements.

Macron stated that the goal is to bolster the security of the continent by increasing the number of French nuclear warheads and allowing temporary deployment of its nuclear-armed aircraft to eight European countries. These countries include Germany, Britain, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, Sweden, and Denmark.

The agreement will enable these countries to host French “strategic air forces,” which will be able to operate across the European continent. Macron emphasized that this arrangement is intended to complicate the calculations of adversaries and enhance France’s deterrence capabilities.

Macron also announced plans to increase the number of nuclear warheads in France’s arsenal, citing the need for an upgrade. The French leader stated that transparency regarding nuclear arsenals will be reduced, reversing past practices.

The announcement comes as Macron highlighted concerns about global instability, including Russia’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine and China’s rapid military build-up. He warned that a widening war between the US, Israel, and Iran could have significant implications for European security.

France maintains the world’s fourth-largest nuclear arsenal, estimated at around 290 warheads. The initiative is seen as an effort to enhance France’s nuclear security in light of shifting global dynamics.
