Gabon suspends Facebook and TikTok operations under regulatory directive

Gabonese authorities have implemented an indefinite social media blackout in the country, citing concerns over social cohesion and national stability. The Central African nation’s media regulator has suspended Facebook and TikTok until further notice, following accusations that these platforms are publishing content that incites conflict and divisions.
According to reports from AFP news agency, the two social media platforms are currently unavailable in Gabon. It is unclear whether other platforms remain operational or have been affected by the ban. The High Authority for Communication announced the suspension on Tuesday, citing “conflict-inducing excesses” as a reason for the decision.
The regulator’s spokesman, Jean-Claude Mendome, stated that “inappropriate, defamatory, hateful and insulting content” is undermining human dignity and social cohesion. He also mentioned the spread of false information, cyberbullying, and unauthorized disclosure of personal data as reasons for the ban.
Mendome emphasized that freedom of expression is guaranteed in Gabon, but it cannot be exercised in a manner that violates national and international laws. The regulator’s decision aims to prevent social conflict, destabilize institutions, and jeopardize national unity and democratic progress.
The suspension comes amid ongoing social unrest, including teachers’ strikes and protests by civil servants. This unrest began less than a year after President Brice Oligui Nguema was elected in August 2023.
