Defending champion Coco Gauff has been eliminated from the French Open by Anastasia Potapova in a dramatic upset. Gauff’s loss marks a significant turn of events at the clay-court Grand Slam, where several top contenders have fallen. World number one Aryna Sabalenka has emerged as a strong contender for the Suzanne Lenglen Cup after defeating Daria Kasatkina 6-0, 7-5.
Gauff struggled to find her form on Saturday, ultimately losing to Potapova in a match that saw the Russian player break Gauff’s service multiple times. The American had opportunities to capitalize on her strong points but was unable to finish them off.
Potapova’s victory has sent shockwaves through the tournament, with many considering her a dark horse for the title. “I’m extremely happy,” Potapova said in an on-court interview after the match. “Coco’s such a champion, and I respect her so much.”
Sabalenka also made significant progress, reaching the fourth round of the tournament with her 100th win as the top-ranked woman. The Belarusian player credited her ability to stay tough under pressure for her success.
Other players have also advanced in the competition, including Matteo Berrettini, who defeated Francisco Comesana in a five-hour match, and Diane Parry, who beat Amanda Anisimova in a closely contested contest. Madison Keys also showed her experience to overcome Victoria Mboko, while Flavio Cobolli sent out Learner Tien with a convincing win.
The French Open continues to unfold, with several players vying for the Suzanne Lenglen Cup. Iga Swiatek and Sabalenka are currently among the top contenders, but other players will need to step up their game if they hope to claim the title.
