UN Security Council Told to Press Israel and Hamas on Ceasefire Obligations
The United Nations Security Council was urged by Nickolay Mladenov, the high representative of the US-founded Board of Peace for Gaza, to take action to ensure a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Speaking via video call, Mladenov presented a roadmap outlining obligations for Israel and Hamas to implement a lasting truce.
Mladenov warned that the deteriorating situation in Gaza risks becoming “permanent” if steps are not taken. He emphasized that the implementation of a ceasefire cannot rely solely on Palestinian commitments, citing ongoing killings and restrictions affecting humanitarian flows as examples.
The conflict in Gaza began in October 2023, resulting in over 72,775 Palestinian deaths. A ceasefire was reached in October 2025, but the Israeli military maintains a strict security regime, leading to further casualties. On Thursday, an Israeli drone attack killed a 26-year-old in Gaza’s al-Mahatta area.
Mladenov cautioned that inaction by both parties could lead to a divided Gaza, with Hamas controlling over two million people across less than half the territory. He warned that this scenario would result in another generation growing up in poverty and fear, with limited opportunities for reconstruction.
The US has announced plans to move the Gaza ceasefire into phase two, which focuses on Hamas disarmament, long-term governance, and the establishment of a Palestinian technocracy. However, the transition has been stalled due to the ongoing war in Iran and global energy crisis.
Mladenov urged the UNSC to use all available means to press Hamas to disarm and for Israel to uphold its commitments under the ceasefire agreement. The Security Council’s response will be crucial in determining the fate of the Gaza Strip and the prospects for a lasting peace.
