Gaza Families Left in Limbo Over Relatives Fates Amid Ongoing Conflict

Thousands of Palestinian families in Gaza are facing uncertainty as they await news about their loved ones held in Israeli detention centers. The Israeli government’s handling of detainees has been criticized by human rights groups, who claim that a policy of “enforced disappearance” is being implemented.

According to reports, many families have received conflicting information about the status of their relatives, with some receiving notifications of death while others are told they are still alive. In one case, a 67-year-old detainee named Hamza Adwan was informed of his death four months after he actually died in custody on September 9, 2025.

Human rights groups have accused Israel of pursuing a policy aimed at making the detention system more deadly, through starvation, medical neglect, and torture. The groups claim that this surge in deaths coincides with Israeli efforts to pass legislation approving the execution of Palestinian prisoners.

As of January 2026, there are over 9,300 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons, most of whom are being held without charge or trial. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has confirmed that it remains barred from visiting Palestinian detainees, citing a lack of access since October 2023.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that many families are living in a state of uncertainty, with some receiving conflicting information about their relatives’ status. In one case, a father was initially told that his son had died in custody on December 13, but later reported seeing him alive after that date.

The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society and the Commission of Detainees’ Affairs have released statistics illustrating the scale of the crackdown. The number of prisoners known to have died in Israeli custody since the war began has risen to 87, including 51 from Gaza.
