Gaza Families Struggle with Burial of Dead Six Months After Ceasefire

Approximately 10,000 Palestinians remain unaccounted for since the start of the conflict in the Gaza Strip in October 2023. According to the United Nations, Israeli bombardment has resulted in over 61 million tonnes of rubble, leaving entire communities buried under the debris.

A recent interview with Abu Mohammed, a Palestinian father from Bureij refugee camp, revealed the ongoing struggles of families seeking to bury their loved ones. Four of his children died during an Israeli attack, and despite efforts to retrieve them, the concrete slabs covering their bodies remain inaccessible.

Mohammed has repeatedly contacted civil defence teams for assistance but has received no response. His two surviving children are currently receiving medical treatment in Egypt without a parent’s presence. The Gaza civil defence spokesperson, Mahmoud Basal, stated that only limited equipment has been allowed into Gaza to retrieve Israeli captives and recover bodies, with the file being closed once those efforts were completed.

Across the Gaza Strip, thousands of people remain buried under the rubble. In one apartment block in Bureij, at least 50 bodies are still trapped beneath the debris. The ceasefire, which was intended to facilitate recovery efforts and reunite families, has yet to yield significant results six months into its implementation.

Israeli forces have continued to occupy more than half of the Gaza Strip, leveling buildings and forcing residents out. Since the ceasefire took effect, at least 738 people have been killed and 2,036 wounded. Authorities have recovered 759 bodies from the rubble, while Israel’s actions in Gaza have resulted in over 72,317 Palestinian deaths and at least 172,158 injuries.

As of now, no further information is available on the current situation in the Gaza Strip.
