Gaza City Residents Show Support for Spain in World Cup Match
A gathering of football fans in Gaza City watched Sunday’s match between Spain and Saudi Arabia on a small screen at a local cafe. The crowd reacted positively to Spain’s 18-year-old player Lamine Yamal’s goal in the tenth minute, followed by three more goals from Spanish players over the next 35 minutes. This secured a comfortable win for Spain.
The patrons of the cafe expressed their support for Spain, citing the team’s past performances and recent political stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Mohammad Attallah, a lawyer from Gaza City, stated that he had followed Spanish football for years but felt a stronger connection to the team after Spain’s government showed support for Gaza during the ongoing conflict.
Several aspects of Spain’s position resonated with Palestinians, including Barcelona star Lamine Yamal’s solidarity with Palestinians and official statements by King Felipe VI. These factors contributed to the strong show of support for Spain among Gaza City residents.
Hani Abu Rizq, another resident, noted that watching football is a way for Gazans to escape daily pressures, but politics often seeps into sports discussions. He stated that Palestinians want to demonstrate their love for life and sports despite the challenges they face.
The gathering at the cafe highlights the strong connection between Gaza City residents and Spanish football, driven by both sporting enthusiasm and political alignment.
