Gaza observes Ramadan despite ongoing conflict and devastation

Gaza Residents Struggle to Find Joy During Ramadan Amid Ongoing Conflict and Devastation

Ramadan has begun in Gaza, typically a time for family gatherings, spiritual devotion, and generosity among Muslims. However, the reality in Gaza is marked by ongoing conflict, devastation, and displacement. The war between Israel and Palestinians has resulted in significant loss of life, with at least 72,061 people killed and 171,715 wounded since October 2023.

The situation on the ground is dire, with financial hardship a major concern for many residents. “There is no cash among the people,” said Waleed Zaqzouq, a Gaza City resident. “There is no work. It’s indeed Ramadan, but Ramadan requires money.” The war has also caused widespread destruction of infrastructure and displaced the majority of the population.

Despite these challenges, some Palestinians are attempting to maintain traditional Ramadan customs. In Khan Younis, calligrapher Hani Dahman painted “Welcome, Ramadan” in Arabic among the ruins, while children looked on. Others have decorated their homes with lights, despite the devastation around them.

The efforts to bring joy and hope during this difficult time are a testament to the resilience of Gaza’s residents. Mohammed Taniri observed that even small gestures, such as decorating homes, can bring happiness to those affected by the conflict. As Ramadan begins, Palestinians in Gaza continue to face significant challenges, but they remain determined to find ways to cope and rebuild their lives.

The Ministry of Health reports that the war has had a devastating impact on Gaza’s population, with many struggling to access basic necessities like food and water. The situation remains fragile, with ongoing violence and displacement affecting many families.
