Residents of Deir el-Balah Cast Votes in Municipal Elections After 17-Year Absence
Deir el-Balah, Gaza - On Monday morning, Salama Badwan, his wife, and daughter arrived at a polling station in central Gaza to cast their votes in the municipal elections. The 43-year-old expressed excitement about participating in the election after a long absence.
The vote marks the first time since 2006 that Deir el-Balah has held municipal elections. The city’s infrastructure was severely damaged during the recent conflict, and polling stations were set up in temporary tents on open land. Many residents have been displaced from their homes, with hundreds of thousands seeking refuge in the city.
The electoral process has been affected by the ongoing “ceasefire” that took effect after Israel’s military operation in Gaza. The war has had a significant impact on daily life, including the municipal elections themselves.
According to Badwan, the importance of the elections lies in providing Palestinians in Gaza with an opportunity to achieve change through peaceful and democratic means. He hopes that the new municipal council will be able to address the scale of crisis left by the war.
The city’s residents have expressed mixed emotions about the elections, with some feeling frustrated with the political class. However, many are optimistic about the possibility of creating change through their participation in the process.
Dunia Badwan, Salama’s 18-year-old daughter, cast her vote for the first time and expressed joy at being able to participate in the democratic process. She chose a candidate list composed mostly of young people, reflecting her hope for a more efficient municipal administration.
The elections have been held despite the ongoing challenges faced by Deir el-Balah, including damaged infrastructure and pressure on public services. The city’s residents are hoping that the new municipal council will be able to address these issues and provide relief to those affected by the war.
