Israels upcoming election may mark the end of Netanyahus political tenure

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing significant pressure ahead of the upcoming general election, slated for October. The elections will likely determine his legacy as prime minister, who has been in office for nearly four decades.

Netanyahu’s handling of wars in the region and corruption charges are under scrutiny. He has reportedly convinced US President Donald Trump to join him in a war on Iran, leading to Tehran’s retaliatory strikes on Israel, the Gulf states, and shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, Israel is engaged in another conflict with the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah.

Netanyahu is also facing criticism for not conducting an independent public inquiry into his government’s actions before and after the Hamas-led attacks into southern Israel on October 7, 2023. The international community has expressed growing concern over Israel’s actions, leading to increased scrutiny and criticism from some countries and within the US political establishment.

Netanyahu faces multiple corruption charges dating back to 2019, which could potentially result in imprisonment if found guilty. The upcoming election comes at a critical moment for Netanyahu and the country.

US President Trump has expressed differing opinions on the future of the war in Lebanon, with his administration seeking to scale back fighting to achieve peace with Iran and restore shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. However, Netanyahu’s government is under pressure from both right-wing and left-wing factions in Israel to continue the military campaign against Hezbollah.

A recent poll suggests that almost three-quarters of Israelis support Israel’s continued occupation of Lebanon, while just over one in 10 oppose it. Former Israeli army chief Gadi Eisenkot has criticized Netanyahu for not articulating his country’s strategy in Lebanon, which he believes led to a security reality that must be addressed.

The upcoming election will likely determine the outcome of Netanyahu’s nearly four-decade-long political career and have significant implications for Israel’s relations with the US.
