New Establishments Emerge in Gaza Amid Ongoing Devastation
A recent visit to Gaza City revealed a stark contrast between the city’s pre-war state and its current reality. The area is littered with rubble, making it difficult to recognize familiar streets. In addition to the destruction, new cafes and restaurants have appeared, constructed with expensive materials and featuring luxurious amenities.
These establishments are not temporary or makeshift, but rather permanent fixtures in the area. They offer a stark contrast to the surrounding environment, which is characterized by half-collapsed buildings and debris. The new businesses cater to a select group of individuals who have benefited from illicit activities during the war, such as smuggling, looting, and hoarding.
In contrast, the majority of Gaza’s population continues to struggle with poverty and lack access to basic necessities like electricity, potable water, and proper education. Many residents live in tents and rely on limited aid from Israel. The author, who is among those affected, reported that their family has lost its livelihood and now lives in a tent near the rubble of their former home.
The emergence of these new establishments highlights the deepening social divide in Gaza. They reflect a system where war profiteering has created a new privileged class, while leaving the majority without access to basic services. The author observed that even those who can afford to visit these establishments often do so with anxiety about returning to the destroyed environment and trauma.
The contrast between the luxurious cafes and restaurants and the dire living conditions of most residents serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing devastation in Gaza.
