Iran Nuclear Deal: Inspections to Proceed Despite Tehrans Concerns

United Nations Nuclear Agency to Conduct Inspections at Iranian Facilities

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has stated that it will conduct inspections at Iran’s nuclear facilities, as outlined in a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with the US. According to Rafael Grossi, head of the IAEA, the MoU explicitly states that “nuclear activities” will be supervised by the agency.

Grossi made this statement during a visit to Japan on Wednesday, where he emphasized that inspections would take place regardless of when they occur. He noted that dates and locations were currently being discussed with Iranian officials, but did not provide specific details.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi has stated that UN inspectors’ access to attacked nuclear sites and materials will be determined within the framework of a final agreement with the US. However, he also emphasized that inspections are contingent on “the other party’s practical action in terminating all sanctions.”

The signing of the MoU last week marked the beginning of 60 days of talks between the US and Iran, aimed at addressing issues such as Tehran’s nuclear program and its enriched uranium stockpile. Iranian officials have expressed skepticism about the IAEA’s ability to conduct inspections without a clear schedule.

US President Donald Trump has stated that IAEA inspectors will be heading to Iran, but emphasized that there is no rush. Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has denied any negotiations regarding Tehran’s ballistic missiles program.

The IAEA has visited Iran in recent months, including the Bushehr nuclear power plant this month. However, inspectors were denied access to bombed sites. Talks between the US and Iran are ongoing, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stating that technical talks will resume on June 29 or 30 in Switzerland.
