Germany secures first-place spot in World Cup group with late win

Germany Secures Knockout Place with Thrilling Comeback Win Over Ivory Coast

In a Group E match at the FIFA World Cup 2026, Germany came from behind to defeat Ivory Coast 2-1, securing their place in the knockout stage for the first time since 2014. The match saw Deniz Undav score two goals off the bench, including a volleyed finish in the 68th minute and a shot that Yahia Fofana was unable to stop.

Ivory Coast had opened the scoring in the first half with Franck Kessie’s goal, following a play created by Yan Diomande. Germany had several chances before Undav levelled the score, but were initially denied due to disallowed goals. The West Africans continued to press for a second goal, but Germany’s defense held strong.

In the second half, Germany regained momentum and found their way through intricate passing. Undav scored his second goal after receiving a pass on the turn, before swivelling and firing home a shot that Fofana had no chance at stopping. Ivory Coast’s Simon Adingra was denied a late chance, but Germany sealed the win with Fofana blocking a low shot from Nathaniel Brown.

Germany now top Group E with six points, while Ivory Coast remain on three after two matches. The team will close out the group stage against Ecuador on Thursday in New Jersey, while Ivory Coast face Curacao in Philadelphia.
