Ghana Fires Football Head Coach Otto Addo 72 Days Before World Cup

Ghana Football Association Announces Departure of Coach Otto Addo

The Ghana Football Association has announced the departure of head coach Otto Addo, effective immediately. This decision comes after a defeat in a friendly match against Germany, which was part of a five-match losing streak for the team.

Addo, a German-born former Borussia Dortmund player, had been appointed as the Black Stars’ coach for a second stint in March 2024. Prior to his current tenure, he led the team at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where they exited the group stage after defeats by Portugal and Uruguay.

Ghana qualified for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in North America, where they will face Panama on June 17 in Toronto. However, the team failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco, marking their first absence from the competition in 21 years.

The Ghana Football Association has not provided further details on a replacement for Addo or the reasons for his departure. The team’s next match is scheduled for June 17 against Panama.
