Arabish Head of Greek Orthodox Church Condemns Attack on Nun in Jerusalem
The head of a Greek Orthodox Church in Jerusalem has issued a statement condemning an attack on a nun in the city earlier this week. Archbishop Atallah Hanna posted on Facebook, stating that “an attack on a nun in the city of Jerusalem occurred amid escalating violations against Christian institutions in the city.” He also expressed concerns about the future of Christianity in the Holy Land.
According to police, a 36-year-old Jewish man was arrested and charged with assaulting the nun. The suspect allegedly followed the nun, pushed her to the ground, and then kicked her while she lay injured. Police described the incident as “driven by potentially racist motives” and viewed it with “utmost severity.”
The attack is part of a pattern of incidents targeting Christian communities in occupied East Jerusalem and Israel, according to the Rossing Center for Education and Dialogue. Churches in Jerusalem have called on Israeli authorities to take decisive action to stop such attacks.
In response to the incident, Israel’s Foreign Ministry released a statement saying that it was “shameful” and condemning violence against all communities. The ministry also stated its commitment to protecting all communities and holding those responsible for violence accountable.
The attack has sparked concerns about the safety of Christians living in the Holy Land.
