Groups Sue Trump Administration Over Repeal of Endangerment Finding

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has rescinded its 2009 climate change finding, known as the endangerment finding. The determination had established that greenhouse gases pose a risk to public health and environmental safety due to their role in driving climate change.

A group of over a dozen health and environmental advocacy organizations have filed a lawsuit against the EPA, alleging that the decision will harm US citizens’ health and welfare. The plaintiffs claim that the rescission of the endangerment finding will lead to increased pollution, higher costs, and avoidable deaths.

The EPA’s decision was made under President Donald Trump, who had campaigned on reducing regulations and promoting fossil fuels. As part of his administration’s efforts to withdraw from climate-change initiatives, Trump announced plans to pull the US out of the Paris climate accord in January 2025 and issued an executive order directing the government to end engagement with international organizations and treaties related to climate change.

The rescission of the endangerment finding has significant implications for environmental regulations in the US. The policy had served as a legal basis for restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions and clean-energy programs. Critics argue that the decision effectively collapses over 15 years of environmental regulations, causing uncertainty for businesses and potentially harming public health.

In response to the lawsuit, EPA officials have stated that the rescission of the endangerment finding allows US consumers greater choice in purchasing automobiles, which had previously been subject to emission standards. However, opponents of the decision argue that it undermines the agency’s authority to regulate greenhouse gases from motor vehicles.
