Gulf states accuse Iran of violating sovereignty in recent attacks

Gulf States and UN Rights Chief Express Concern Over Iranian Attacks

Representatives from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states have addressed the United Nations Human Rights Council, stating that Iranian attacks on their territories constitute a gross violation of state sovereignty. The GCC member states convened an emergency meeting in Geneva to discuss the issue.

During the meeting, Saudi Arabia’s representative condemned Iranian attacks, emphasizing that they violate international law and undermine efforts towards peace. Qatar’s representative added that these attacks have grave repercussions for human rights and global security.

The UN’s rights chief, Volker Turk, warned of an “unmitigated catastrophe” in the Middle East as the conflict between Iran and its perceived adversaries approaches its one-month mark. He urged all states to work towards ending the conflict.

Kuwait’s ambassador noted that the Gulf region is facing an existential threat to international and regional security due to Iranian aggression. The de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz has also raised concerns about economic and supply route disruptions.

The GCC countries are seeking a seat at the negotiating table between the United States, Iran, and Israel. However, the representatives emphasized that guarantees from Iran would be essential for their participation in future negotiations.

In recent days, the volume of incoming attacks on Gulf countries appears to have decreased, but a small attack from Iran could still cause significant disruption. The UN rights chief’s warning highlights the need for caution and cooperation to prevent further escalation.
