Hamas Confirms Deaths of Several Leaders
Hamas has confirmed that several of its leaders were killed in Israel’s military operations earlier this year. The Qassam Brigades announced the deaths on Monday, stating that Mohammed Sinwar, the Gaza chief, and Abu Obeida, the spokesperson for the group’s armed wing, had been killed.
Additionally, Hamas confirmed the deaths of Mohammed Shabanah, the head of the Rafah Brigade, and two other leaders, Hakam al-Issi and Raed Saad. The Israeli military had previously announced that it had killed Sinwar in May, and later confirmed the death of Abu Obeida three months later.
Abu Obeida’s real name was Huthaifa al-Kahlout, and his last statement was made in early September as Israel began its military assault on Gaza City. Hamas stated that Abu Obeida was a key voice for the group during a short-lived ceasefire earlier this year.
This marks the latest in a series of high-profile deaths of Hamas leaders at the hands of Israel over the past two years, including top military and political leaders such as Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Deif, and Ismail Haniyeh.
