Hong Kong Pro-Democracy Activist Sentenced to 20 Years Imprisonment
A high-profile case involving Jimmy Lai, a prominent pro-democracy figure and media mogul, has concluded with a 20-year prison sentence under China’s national security law. The verdict was delivered on Monday, marking the end of a five-year trial.
Lai, 78, was first arrested in August 2020 and found guilty last year on two counts of foreign collusion and one count of seditious publication. He faces a lengthy prison term, with rights groups describing it as “profoundly unjust.”
The national security law, introduced in Hong Kong in 2020, has been criticized for its impact on pro-democracy activists. The law effectively criminalizes protest or any act of subversion in the territory, resulting in a near-100 percent conviction rate.
Lai’s case has garnered international attention, with world leaders and global rights groups expressing concern. Before his arrest, Lai was a well-known figure in Hong Kong, having built a business empire that included the tabloid Apple Daily. He had openly supported the city’s democracy movement, including during the 2019 protests.
In addition to Lai, six co-defendants from Apple Daily received jail terms ranging from six years and three months to 10 years. Three other pro-democracy figures, who organized an annual memorial for the Tiananmen Square massacre, were charged under the national security law last month.
The Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, founded by these activists, has been a vocal advocate for democracy and anti-corruption efforts in Beijing. The alliance was established in 1989 to support protesters following the Tiananmen Square crackdown.
Lai’s family, lawyer, supporters, and former colleagues have warned that he may face health complications while incarcerated due to pre-existing conditions.
