Houthi Leader Warns of Targeting Any Israeli Presence in Somaliland

Israel Announces Official Recognition of Somaliland

In a move announced on Friday, Israel has officially recognized Somaliland, a self-proclaimed republic that declared its independence from Somalia in 1991. This marks the first time Israel has extended recognition to the region.

According to a statement by the Houthi rebel group’s chief, Abdel-Malik al-Hothi, any Israeli presence in Somaliland would be considered a “military target” due to its perceived threat to Somalia and Yemen. The group warned that this move carries grave consequences for regional security.

Somaliland has been seeking international recognition for decades and enjoys strategic advantages on the Gulf of Aden. It also maintains its own currency, passport, and military forces. Analysts suggest that a rapprochement with Somaliland could provide Israel with better access to the Red Sea, potentially enhancing its ability to target Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Israel has previously struck targets in Yemen in response to Houthi attacks on Israel, which were said to be in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. The Houthis have since halted their attacks following a fragile truce in Gaza.

The move was criticized by various international organizations, including the African Union, Egypt, Turkey, and several Gulf Cooperation Council member states. The European Union emphasized the importance of respecting Somalia’s sovereignty.
