Tamil Nadu Voters Cast Ballots for State Legislative Assembly Election
A three-way contest is underway in Tamil Nadu as voters cast their ballots for the state’s 234-member legislative assembly. C Joseph Vijay, a 51-year-old actor-turned-politician, is one of the candidates vying for power.
Vijay has launched his own party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which aims to challenge the long-standing dominance of the governing Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the main opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). The DMK is led by incumbent Chief Minister MK Stalin, while Edappadi K Palaniswami of the AIADMK heads the National Democratic Alliance.
Tamil Nadu has a history of electing film stars as leaders, with some still revered by people after their deaths. The state’s electoral landscape has shifted to include a third party, Vijay’s TVK, which is contesting 234 seats in the assembly election.
Demographically, Tamil Nadu is predominantly Hindu, with Christians and Muslims making up smaller percentages of the population. The state’s caste structure is complex, with various groups holding different levels of social and economic status.
Vijay has a background in film acting, having started his career as a child actor in movies directed by his father. He gained widespread recognition after starring in the 2004 film Ghilli, which carried a subtle political undertone. Vijay’s entry into politics was marked with fanfare when he launched his party in 2024.
The election is being held on Thursday, and voters will choose from among these three parties to determine the state’s next leadership.
