India’s Cricket Board Awards $14.24 Million Bonus to T20 World Cup Champions
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a bonus of 1.31 billion rupees ($14.24 million) to the Indian cricket team, which won the recent T20 World Cup tournament. The award is in addition to the $2.34 million prize money awarded by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The BCCI stated that the bonus will be shared among all members of the team, including coaches and support staff. This amount is significantly higher than the total prize pot for the tournament, which was $11.25 million.
India secured its third men’s T20 World Cup title with a dominant 96-run victory over New Zealand in the final on Sunday. The team will receive the bonus as recognition of their achievement.
The BCCI has previously awarded bonuses to Indian teams that have won major tournaments, including the Champions Trophy. In 2022, the team received a $6.72 million cash bonus for winning the tournament.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav stated that the team’s next goal is to win a gold medal at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia noted that India’s victory cemented its place among the most successful teams in T20 World Cup history.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, and midnight celebrations broke out across the country as fans took to the streets to celebrate the team’s win.
