West Bengal Set to Elect New Government in State Legislature Election
On April 23 and 29, nearly 68 million people in West Bengal are expected to cast their votes for the state legislature election, with 294 lawmakers set to be elected. The election marks a significant milestone in the eastern Indian state’s governance, as it has never been governed by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Campaigning efforts have taken an unconventional approach, with some BJP candidates using fish as a campaign tool. Sharadwat Mukherjee, a candidate from the BJP, was seen waving a Catla fish in his hands while canvassing for votes.
The use of fish in campaigning has been attributed to Bengalis’ love for fish, which is a staple in both Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine. The issue has also taken on a political dimension, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee doubling down on identity politics to corner the BJP.
Banerjee has warned that if the BJP were to come to power, they would impose bans or restrictions on the sale of meat, including fish. However, the BJP has rejected these allegations.
Analysts argue that the issue surrounding fish has been “constructed” by Banerjee as part of her campaign strategy. Biswanath Chakraborty, a psephologist and political analyst, stated that the BJP’s response to Banerjee’s claims has helped keep the debate over fish at the forefront of voters’ minds.
Utsa Ray, an assistant professor at Jadavpur University, emphasized the importance of fish in Bengali culture, citing its availability due to the state’s geographical location. The election results will be declared on May 4, marking a crucial moment for West Bengal’s governance.
