Iran asks UN to address Trumps reckless comments on protests

UN Ambassador Urges Condemnation of Trump’s Threats Against Iran

Iran’s United Nations ambassador, Amir Saeed Iravani, has written to the UN secretary-general and the president of the UN Security Council (UNSC), requesting that they condemn “unlawful threats” made by US President Donald Trump towards Tehran. The letter was sent on Friday, following a statement by Trump in which he warned that the US would intervene if Iran violently suppressed protests.

In his letter, Iravani called for an “unequivocal and firm condemnation” of Trump’s statements, describing them as a “serious violation” of the UN Charter and international law. He also stated that any attempt to incite unrest or justify external pressure through internal unrest is a gross violation of Iran’s sovereignty.

The protests in Iran have continued across the country, with people gathering in various cities, including Qom, Marvdasht, Yasuj, Mashhad, and Hamedan, as well as in Tehran. At least nine people have been killed and 44 arrested in the unrest, according to reports. The deputy governor of Qom province reported that another person had died after a grenade exploded in his hand.

Trump’s statement was made on social media platform Truth Social, in which he stated that if Iran “violently kills peaceful protesters”, the US would come to their rescue. In response, Ali Larijani, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, described US interference as equivalent to chaos across the region and the destruction of American interests.

The protests in Iran are largely driven by economic grievances, including high prices and inflation rates. Iranian leaders have taken a conciliatory tone in response, with President Masoud Pezeshkian acknowledging that the government is at fault for the situation and promising to find solutions.
