Iraq Secures World Cup Spot After Grueling Qualification Campaign
Iraq’s national football team has secured their spot at the 2026 World Cup, marking a historic milestone for the country. The team, known as the Lions of Mesopotamia, completed their qualification process after playing 21 matches over two years.
The journey to the tournament was not without its challenges. Following the US-Israel attacks on Iran, which caused travel disruptions in the Middle East, Iraq’s players embarked on a long and arduous trip from Iraq to Jordan before boarding a delayed flight out of the region. Coach Graham Arnold reported that his team required three days off upon their return to recover from the extensive journey.
Iraq ultimately defeated Bolivia 2-1 in Monterrey, securing World Cup qualification for the first time since 1986. The match was won by Ali Al-Hamadi, a 24-year-old forward who has played for English side Luton Town on loan. Al-Hamadi’s family fled Iraq after his father was released from prison and settled in Liverpool.
The team will now prepare for their World Cup debut, with coach Arnold drawing on his experience leading Australia to the round of 16 at Qatar 2022. The Iraqi squad will face a challenging group stage, featuring France, Norway, and Senegal.
