US Military Responds to Iranian Attack in Strait of Hormuz
The US military has confirmed that it intercepted and responded to an “unprovoked” Iranian attack on its ships in the Strait of Hormuz, a major escalation of tensions between the two countries. The incident occurred in Iran’s territorial waters, where the US Navy had previously targeted an oil tanker.
According to the Iranian military, the US also violated the ceasefire by carrying out air strikes on civilian areas, including Qeshm Island. The Iranian response caused significant damage to US ships, with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy using ballistic and antiship cruise missiles and destructive drones in retaliation.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that it intercepted unprovoked Iranian attacks and responded with “self-defence strikes”. CENTCOM added that no US assets were struck and that the goal was to protect American forces. The military emphasized that it does not seek escalation but remains prepared to defend itself.
This incident marks the first major military response from Iran since the US blockade of its ports began several weeks ago. The naval siege has been a key aspect of President Trump’s pressure campaign against Iran since the ceasefire came into effect last month. Reports indicate that blasts were heard at several Iranian ports, including Qeshm Island and Bandar Abbas.
The skirmishes come as Washington and Tehran engage in advanced talks to end the war. Earlier this week, the US shot down seven small Iranian drones, and Iran renewed its drone and missile attacks against the United Arab Emirates.
