Iran Conflict Enters 59th Day Amid Diplomatic Efforts to End Fighting
April 27, 2026 • Al Jazeera
US President Donald Trump has stated that Iran could initiate telephone negotiations with the United States if it wishes to discuss an end to the ongoing war between the two countries and Israel.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has been actively engaged in diplomatic efforts, traveling to Pakistan on Sunday before heading to Oman. He then proceeded to Russia on Monday as part of these initiatives.
The US President’s statement comes after his representatives, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, had their planned visit to Islamabad canceled. The two main areas of contention between the parties are Iran’s nuclear program and access to the Strait of Hormuz, which remains under a de facto blockade by Iran.
Meanwhile, Israeli forces have increased attacks against Lebanon, resulting in at least 14 fatalities on Sunday. This development comes despite a US-brokered ceasefire.
As of day 59 of the conflict, details regarding the situation remain available.
