Iran Nuclear Talks: Key Takeaways from Araghchis Exclusive Interview

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has confirmed direct communication with US President Donald Trump’s top envoy Steve Witkoff, according to an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera on Tuesday.

Araghchi stated that he receives messages from Witkoff directly, but clarified that this does not imply negotiations. “All messages are conveyed through the Foreign Ministry or received by it,” he said. Araghchi also emphasized that Iran has had limited success in negotiating with the US in the past, citing Washington’s withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal.

The Iranian foreign minister acknowledged that the US has attacked Iran twice during recent negotiations, in June 2025 and during the current conflict. He expressed skepticism about the outcome of future talks, stating “We do not have any faith that negotiations with the US will yield any results.”

Araghchi discussed the future of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway through which 20% of global oil and gas pass in peacetime. He stated that Iran and Oman would decide on the strait’s future once the war is over, but emphasized its importance as a “peaceful waterway.” However, Gulf nations, including Qatar, have expressed their desire to be included in any talks regarding the strait.

Araghchi also addressed concerns about US troop deployments to the Gulf and reported media speculation about a potential ground invasion of Iran. He stated that Iran is prepared to defend itself if necessary, saying “We are waiting for them… We know very well how to defend ourselves.”

In addition, Araghchi mentioned that some countries have engaged in negotiations with the Iranian government for the transit of their ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
