Iran’s National Football Team Falls Short at World Cup
Tehran, Iran - The Iranian national football team has concluded its seventh appearance in the FIFA World Cup, failing to advance to the knockout phase. The team finished third in Group G with three points from three draws.
The team’s elimination was largely due to a combination of factors, including poor luck and restrictive conditions. The 2026 tournament took place amidst heightened tensions between Iran and the United States, which has been at war with Iran for four months. The US military bombed several islands in the Strait of Hormuz just hours before the Iran-Egypt match.
Iran’s team was subject to tight restrictions, including being based mostly in Mexico’s Tijuana instead of Arizona, and having to enter the US within 24 hours of a match and leave on the same day. These conditions were imposed due to concerns about the team’s alleged affiliation with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The team’s head coach, Amir Ghalenoei, expressed frustration during a live post-match interview, stating that he believed “God was at odds with us” due to the lack of good luck. The team scored three VAR-overturned goals during the competition, which is the highest among all teams.
In the final match, Iran needed one of several outcomes to advance, but ultimately fell short. The team’s players and staff were subjected to emotional celebrations and taunts from other teams, including Egypt, which advanced to the knockout phase.
