Iran sets formal dates for funeral and burial of former Supreme Leader Khamenei

Funeral Ceremonies for Iran’s Late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei Scheduled

A series of funeral ceremonies are set to take place in Tehran and Qom, followed by a burial in Mashhad, according to state media reports. The burial is scheduled to occur on July 9, with the initial date having been postponed due to ongoing tensions between Iran and the US-Israel alliance.

The funeral ceremonies will commence in Tehran on July 4, with additional services taking place in Qom on July 7. Following these events, Khamenei’s remains will be transported to his hometown of Mashhad for burial.

Ali Khamenei, who led Iran from 1989 until his death, was killed in a joint US-Israeli air strike on February 4. Prior to his death, he had been the country’s Supreme Leader since 1989, following the passing of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

Khamenei’s successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, has remained out of public view since the US-Israel conflict began. In a recent statement, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned that Mojtaba Khamenei appeared to be taking on a more active role in negotiations between the two countries following an April 8 truce.

The funeral ceremonies and burial will provide an opportunity for the Iranian people to pay their respects to the late Supreme Leader.
