Iran to Examine Regional Proposals for Nuclear Talks with US
Tehran is reviewing several diplomatic initiatives aimed at easing tensions with the United States as it anticipates a framework for talks on its nuclear program. According to Iranian officials, the country expects progress on a framework agreement in the coming days.
The announcement comes amid a shift in rhetoric between Tehran and Washington, which appears to be pulling back from the threat of military action. In January, Iran violently suppressed mass protests, prompting US President Donald Trump to send warships to the Middle East. However, he later called for Iran to make a deal to resume talks on its nuclear program.
Indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States are reportedly ongoing, with countries in the region serving as mediators. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has held telephone calls with Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Turkey to discuss the latest developments.
The US has set conditions for resuming talks, including an end to uranium enrichment, curtailment of its missile program, and halt of support for allied armed groups in the region. Iranian officials have indicated that the country is willing to engage in discussions on the nuclear file, but it remains unclear whether Iran will compromise on non-negotiable issues.
The situation has been tense in recent weeks, with the US deploying an aircraft carrier and fighter jets to the Indian Ocean as a precautionary measure. Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has warned that any attack would result in a “regional war.” The outcome of the negotiations remains uncertain, but officials in the region are working to avoid conflict through diplomatic efforts.
