Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a phone call with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday, discussing the ongoing situation in Iran amid attacks from the US and Israel.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing, Araghchi assured Wang that Iran would take all necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of Chinese citizens and institutions within the country. The Iranian minister also expressed concern over the recent military actions by the US and Israel, which he described as a “war” against Iran.
Araghchi stated that despite ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran, the US had launched another attack on Iran, contradicting the progress made in their previous discussions. Wang Yi responded by reaffirming China’s commitment to its traditional friendship with Iran and supporting Tehran’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.
The call comes as China continues to maintain close ties with Iran, having worked to reduce Tehran’s isolation on the global stage. In 2021, China signed a 25-year strategic agreement with Iran, which has strengthened their economic partnership. According to Chatham House, China is an important trade partner for Iran, accounting for over 80% of Iran’s exported oil in 2025.
In a recent briefing paper, Ahmed Aboudouh, an associate fellow at Chatham House, noted that China remains a vital lifeline for the Iranian economy, which has been severely impacted by international sanctions. The two countries have maintained close relations and cooperation on various fronts, including regional security and economic development.
