Irans Bazaar Merchants Protest Amid Economic Uncertainty and Government Regulations

Tehran’s Bazaar Sees Ongoing Protests Amid Economic Decline

Protesters in Tehran’s bazaar have continued to demonstrate despite efforts by authorities to quell the unrest. In a recent address, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei emphasized the distinction between legitimate grievances and outright rebellion, stating that officials should engage with protesters but not rioters. The bazaar has been praised by Khamenei as one of the most loyal sectors of the Islamic Republic.

However, the reality on the ground suggests that the authorities’ attempt to separate the bazaar from broader unrest has failed. Tear gas was deployed against demonstrators chanting anti-state slogans, including those targeting the supreme leader. The bazaar’s economic standing has been eroded over the past 20 years due to various factors, including state favoritism towards the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and large religious-revolutionary foundations.

Historically, the bazaar played a significant role in the 1979 revolution that overthrew Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi. In the aftermath of the revolution, powerful bazaar merchants were integrated into the new state’s architecture, gaining influence over key institutions and ministries. Despite this, the bazaar’s economic power has declined significantly since then.

In recent years, the bazaar’s decline can be attributed to a range of factors, including sanctions management, chronic inflation, and economic liberalization policies. The bazaar’s merchants have secured import licenses, run large trading firms, and benefited from preferential access to the official exchange rate. However, these advantages have been eroded over time.

The bazaar’s influence within the state has waxed and waned over the years, with some presidents backing its interests while others have implemented policies that accelerated its decline. The current protests in Tehran’s bazaar serve as a reminder of the ongoing economic and social challenges facing the country.
