US Public Opinion on Iran War Remains Unfavorable
The United States and Israel launched their military operation against Iran on February 28, marking 100 days since the start of the conflict. According to recent polls, public opinion remains overwhelmingly unfavorable towards the war. A University of Maryland Critical Issues Poll found that only 16% of US voters believe the US has won or is winning the war.
The poll also revealed that a majority of voters, including 33% of Republicans, say the war has had more negative than positive effects on US interests. In contrast, only 12% of respondents, including 25% of Republicans, said the war’s impact has been more positive than negative.
Experts attribute the lack of public backing for the war to its perceived unnecessary and detrimental nature. Shibley Telhami, a professor of peace and development at the University of Maryland, stated that “few Americans think that this war with Iran serves American interests.”
The conflict has had significant economic implications, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has led to soaring oil and gas prices. A recent Institute for Global Affairs (IGA) poll found that 79% of voters, including a majority of Republicans, Democrats, and independents, say the war “has affected the cost of living” in the US.
The unfavorable public opinion on the war is expected to have consequences for President Donald Trump’s re-election prospects. The midterm elections in November may also impact Trump’s agenda for the rest of his presidency.
