Irans Economy Strained by War and Rising Prices

Tehran, Iran – Prices in Iran have surged, with millions of jobs lost or on pause due to the ongoing war with the US and Israel. On the first day of the working week, Iranians faced higher prices for essential items such as food, medicine, cars, electrical devices, and petrochemical products compared to the previous week.
The economic damage is attributed to a combination of factors, including local mismanagement, infrastructure bombardment, US sanctions, a naval blockade, and a near-total internet shutdown in Tehran. The national currency, the rial, has reached an all-time low of 1.84 million against the US dollar in the open market.
In other markets, sellers and customers are uncertain about how to proceed due to the ongoing uncertainty over the economy’s future. Some vendors have taken advantage of the situation by increasing prices at unprecedented rates. For example, a 256GB iPhone 17 Pro Max priced at $1,200 in the US is being offered for close to 5 billion rials ($2,750) in some shops.
The government has raised the monthly minimum wage by about 60 percent and offers subsidies worth less than $10 per month per person. However, many residents are struggling to make ends meet, with one resident stating that “the numbers don’t add up” between prices and salaries.
Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has stated that Iran must defeat its enemies in an economic and cultural struggle, as well as militarily. He emphasized the need for businesses to refrain from firing workers whenever possible and expressed confidence in the country’s progress towards advancement.
