Ali Larijani Appointed as Key Figure in Iran’s Post-Khamenei Leadership
Ali Larijani, a 67-year-old Iranian politician, has taken on a prominent role following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. A longtime insider with a reputation for pragmatism, Larijani is expected to play a crucial part in steering Iran’s security strategy amidst ongoing tensions with Israel and the US.
Born in Najaf, Iraq, on June 3, 1958, to a wealthy family from Amol, Larijani comes from an influential dynasty. His father was a prominent religious scholar, and his brothers have held significant positions within Iran’s government and judiciary. Larijani has maintained close ties with the country’s post-1979 revolutionary elite, including marrying the daughter of Morteza Motahhari, a close confidant of Islamic Republic founder Ruhollah Khomeini.
Larijani’s background is marked by both academic and professional achievements. He holds degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science from Sharif University of Technology, as well as master’s and doctorate degrees in Western philosophy from the University of Tehran. His thesis focused on Immanuel Kant. Larijani has also served in various roles, including culture minister under President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, head of the state broadcaster (IRIB), and Parliament speaker for three consecutive terms.
On March 1, Larijani delivered a statement on social media following US-Israeli air strikes that killed Supreme Leader Khamenei and IRGC commander Mohammad Pakpour. The statement expressed outrage and vowed to take action against the US and Israel. As Iran navigates its biggest crisis since 1979, Larijani is expected to play a key role alongside the three-man transitional council running the country.
Larijani’s appointment as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council marks his return to this position, which he previously held from 2008 to 2020. His experience and influence will be crucial in shaping Iran’s security strategy during this tumultuous period.
