US-Iran Talks Continue as Proposal Review Ongoing
The United States has yet to receive a response from Iran on its latest proposal aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in the region. The proposal, which was presented earlier this week, includes several key demands, including an end to Iran’s nuclear program and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
According to US media reports, the proposal requires Iran to freeze uranium enrichment for at least 12 years and reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 30 days. Additionally, Iran would be required to hand over approximately 440kg of enriched uranium. In exchange, the US has promised to lift some sanctions and release frozen Iranian assets.
The Trump administration had expected a response from Iran by Friday, but officials say Tehran is still reviewing the proposal. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the US expects a response within hours, while President Donald Trump said he hopes to receive an answer “very soon.”
Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed that Tehran is reviewing the US proposal and considering its response. Al Jazeera correspondent Resul Serdar Atas reported that expectations had been building for Iran to issue a response on Friday, but it has not happened.
The delay in responding to the proposal may be due to concerns about the technical details of the agreement. Iranian officials have stated that they need to review the proposal carefully and obtain approval from multiple power centers before sending a response. Ultimately, Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei must give the green light for any response to be sent.
The US proposal has been met with skepticism by some experts, who suggest that Iran may be trying to appear in control of the situation while also gaining leverage. The Iranian government has stated that any agreement must be “fair and comprehensive.”
