Iraq qualifies for FIFA World Cup 2026

Iraq’s National Football Team Secures FIFA World Cup Spot Amid War Tensions

Baghdad, Iraq - The Iraqi national football team has qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in nearly 40 years, securing a 2-1 victory over Bolivia on Tuesday night. This achievement marks the country’s 48th and final spot in the tournament.

The team’s journey to qualification was marked by challenges, including a three-day trip from Mexico after Iraq suspended air travel due to ongoing conflict with Iran, the United States, and Israel. Despite these difficulties, players Ali al-Hamadi and Aymen Hussein scored goals in the decisive match.

Supporters gathered in Baghdad’s main shopping areas at dawn to celebrate the team’s triumph, despite the ongoing war that has resulted in at least 100 deaths in Iraq since the conflict began. The crowd was seen waving Iraqi flags and chanting slogans, with some vendors offering free tea to those celebrating.

Iraqi leaders have congratulated the team, and officials have declared a two-day holiday following the victory. The team will compete in World Cup Group I against France, Senegal, and Norway. State television broadcast nationwide celebrations, highlighting the country’s unity amidst the conflict.
