Amnesty International Calls on Israel to Reconsider Death Penalty Legislation
A human rights group has expressed concerns over proposed legislation in Israel that would expand the use of the death penalty. The bills, currently under discussion in the Knesset, aim to revise existing laws governing capital punishment. According to Amnesty International, these changes would disproportionately affect Palestinians and potentially violate international law.
The organization stated that two bills being considered by lawmakers would introduce new provisions allowing for the application of the death penalty in specific circumstances. These amendments would allegedly be reserved for Palestinians, who would face “punishment is being reserved for, and weaponised against” under the proposed legislation.
Israeli authorities have defended the measures as a necessary deterrent against deadly attacks. However, legal experts have expressed concerns that these changes would contravene international legal norms and result in unjust treatment of Palestinians.
The proposed legislation comes amid heightened tensions between Israel and Palestinian groups. The bills are currently being debated by lawmakers, with some arguing that they would strengthen Israel’s apartheid system against Palestinians.
Amnesty International has urged the Israeli government to reconsider its stance on capital punishment, citing concerns over potential miscarriages of justice and unequal treatment under the law.
