Multiple Strikes in Lebanon Kill at Least 10 People
At least 10 people have been killed in strikes carried out by Israel across southern Lebanon on Saturday. The latest wave of attacks has increased the total recorded over the previous 24 hours to 41, according to the Ministry of Health.
The overall death toll since March 2 is now 2,659, with 8,183 others injured. Three people were killed in an Israeli attack on the town of Shoukine in Nabatieh district, while two people died in a separate attack on a car in the village of Kfar Dajjal.
Three others were killed when a home was hit in the village of Lwaizeh, and a strike on the village of Shoukin also resulted in two fatalities. Israeli forces carried out an air strike near al-Quds roundabout in the city of Nabatieh, and warplanes attacked the town of Siddiqine in Tyre district.
The strikes are part of ongoing violence between Israel and Hezbollah, with over one million people in Lebanon registered as displaced since the outbreak of the war. Hezbollah has pledged to continue attacks on Israeli forces inside Lebanese territory, targeting multiple gatherings of soldiers and vehicles in several front-line towns.
According to reports from Beirut and Amman, the situation remains tense, with China’s envoy to the United Nations stating that there is no real ceasefire in place, only a “lesser fire”. Israel has claimed its attacks target Hezbollah, but many of the dead were civilians. The conflict began on March 2, when Hezbollah fired rockets into northern Israel, and has since seen hundreds of air strikes and a ground invasion of southern Lebanon.
The latest developments come as Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, faces pressure from all quarters to abandon the ceasefire. Senior officers have reportedly expressed frustration with the current situation, citing daily injuries from fibre-optic cable drones used by Hezbollah.
