Israeli forces reportedly kill Iranian intelligence official in latest operation

Defence Minister Israel Katz has made a statement claiming that Israel was responsible for the death of Esmaeil Khatib, Iran’s intelligence minister. Tehran has thus far declined to comment or confirm the attack.

If the claim is substantiated, it would be the third major high-profile assassination of Iranian leaders in two days. On Tuesday, Israeli air strikes targeted and killed Ali Larijani, Iran’s security chief, as well as Gholamreza Soleimani, head of the Basij paramilitary force.

Iran plans to hold funerals for both men on Wednesday. Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s foreign minister, stated in an interview with Al Jazeera that the US and Israel have yet to acknowledge that Iran’s government relies on a collective leadership rather than a single individual.
