Israeli Forces Launch Ground Operations in Southern Lebanon

The Israeli military has begun ground operations in southern Lebanon, targeting key sites near the town of Khiam. The operation is part of an effort to expand Israel’s forward defense area, according to a statement released by the Israeli army on Monday.

At least three air strikes have struck the city of Khiam, which is considered a stronghold of Hezbollah. The latest conflict began after Hezbollah fired rockets in response to the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This marks the first time Hezbollah has attacked Israel since the 2024 ceasefire.

In addition to the air strikes on Khiam, Israeli forces have also conducted raids on several other locations in southern Lebanon, including Yater, Burj Qalawiya, Sultaniya, Chaqra, Qantara, and as-Sawana. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from these raids.

The Israeli army stated that its troops are focused on destroying terrorist infrastructure and eliminating terrorists in the region. The town of Khiam is strategically located near the Israeli border and the Litani River, giving it a commanding view over northern Israel and nearby Lebanese plains.

According to Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr, a “major battle” is underway in and around Khiam, with both sides holding strategic advantages due to the town’s elevation. The road network surrounding Khiam also provides access to other areas of southern Lebanon, including the Bekaa Valley.

As a result of the conflict, over 800,000 people have been forced to flee their homes, with evacuation orders issued for many neighborhoods in southern Lebanon and the capital, Beirut. So far, Israeli attacks in Lebanon have resulted in at least 850 deaths, including 107 children and 66 women.
