Israeli Finance Minister Calls for Annexation of Southern Lebanon
In a recent radio interview, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich stated that the Litani River should be considered as the new border between Israel and Lebanon. This statement comes amid an intensified assault on southern Lebanon by the Israeli military.
The Israeli military has been carrying out airstrikes and ground operations in the region since early March, following a series of rocket attacks from Hezbollah towards Israeli territory. The conflict has resulted in significant damage to civilian infrastructure, including residential buildings and bridges.
According to reports, over 1,039 people have been killed and at least 2,876 others wounded across Lebanon since the start of the conflict. Additionally, more than 1.2 million people have been forced to flee their homes due to the violence.
The United Nations has expressed concern about the situation, stating that the conflict is having dire consequences on Lebanese civilians. The organization reports that over 130,000 people, including 46,000 children, are currently sheltering in collective sites nationwide.
Meanwhile, Israeli forces have been destroying infrastructure across southern Lebanon, including fuel stations and health centers. A spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that the conflict has pushed more than 1.2 million people to flee their homes.
The World Health Organization has also reported at least 64 attacks on healthcare facilities in Lebanon, resulting in 51 deaths and 91 injuries. Human rights organizations have urged Israel to halt its attacks on Lebanese civilians, including healthcare workers.
