Heavy Rainfall Hits Gaza, Displacement Camps Struggle with Flooding and Limited Aid
A winter storm has brought heavy rainfall to the Gaza Strip, causing widespread flooding in displacement camps and exacerbating the struggles of Palestinians who have been displaced for over two years. The rain has left ankle-deep water in tents, making it difficult for residents to stay dry.
The Gaza Strip has seen significant destruction since Israel’s ongoing conflict, with nearly 80% of buildings estimated to be damaged or destroyed by the United Nations. Displaced families are struggling to cope with the situation, using makeshift solutions such as shovels and tin cans to remove water from their tents.
According to reports, at least 15 people have died this month due to hypothermia, and emergency workers have warned against staying in damaged buildings due to collapse risks. However, shelter options remain scarce, particularly for those affected by the ongoing Israeli bombardment.
Humanitarian organizations have reported that aid deliveries to Gaza fall significantly short of ceasefire-mandated amounts. In the past week, 4,200 aid trucks entered Gaza, including sanitation equipment and winter supplies, but the quantity of tents provided was not specified.
The Norwegian Refugee Council’s Shelter Cluster has reported that approximately 72,000 tents and 403,000 tarps have been delivered to Gaza since the ceasefire. However, aid groups emphasize that current supplies cannot meet the overwhelming needs of those affected.
According to Philippe Lazzarini, commissioner-general of the UN refugee aid organization in Gaza, “Aid supplies are not being allowed in at the scale required.” The situation remains dire for Palestinians in Gaza, who continue to face significant challenges in accessing basic necessities.
