Israels Continued Attacks on Lebanon Threaten Hezbollah Disarmament Efforts

Israel Continues Attacks on Lebanon, Hezbollah Refuses Disarmament

Beirut, Lebanon – Israel has conducted multiple airstrikes on Lebanon this week, targeting areas associated with the Lebanese group Hezbollah and the Palestinian group Hamas. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has documented over 10,000 ceasefire violations by Israel since a US-brokered ceasefire was established in November 2024.

The Israeli military occupies five points in Lebanon, despite agreeing to withdraw all troops. On Monday, Israel issued forced evacuation orders for four villages in the south and the Bekaa Valley before bombing the areas. The following day, Israel conducted additional attacks in southern Lebanon, stating that they targeted Hezbollah operatives.

Since October 2023, Israel has killed over 4,000 people in Lebanon as part of its conflict with Hezbollah. Most of the dead were killed between September and November 2024, when more than 1.2 million people were displaced by evacuation warnings.

The World Bank estimates that Israel left Lebanon with approximately $11 billion in needs for reconstruction and recovery. The war has weakened Hezbollah’s power, with much of its military leadership being killed during the conflict.

In August 2025, the Lebanese government approved a plan to have the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) disarm Hezbollah. However, the group has repeatedly rejected calls for disarmament. Naim Qassem, the current leader of Hezbollah, stated that Israel’s continued aggression and US pressure on Lebanon make it impossible for the group to accept disarmament.

The Lebanese government is set to meet on Thursday to discuss “phase two” of the disarmament plan, which would involve disarming Hezbollah and Palestinian militias from a specific area. The deadline for disarmament below the Litani River was the end of 2025. Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has stated that his government is focused on ending Israeli attacks, removing Israeli troops from occupied areas, and returning Lebanese detainees held by Israel.

Lebanese military officials have reported difficulties in operating in certain areas due to the presence of Israeli-occupied points. The area between the Litani River and the Awali River, which spans approximately 40km, is currently being targeted for disarmament.
