Israels Policing Practices Under Scrutiny Amid Rising Crime Rates in Palestinian Areas

Israel’s National Security Minister Announces Operation to Address Rising Youth Violence

A national operation has been launched by Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir to address rising youth violence in Palestinian areas. The operation aims to restore security and calm to parents, with those harming Israeli civilians facing severe consequences.

Ben-Gvir stated that the operation will target a surge in youth violence, which has led to the deaths of almost 100 people and estimated annual costs of up to $6.7 billion. The minister’s response was met with criticism from some who argue that it does not adequately address the underlying issues contributing to the violence.

According to data from Israel’s finance ministry, the murder rate in Palestinian communities increased from 4.9 per 100,000 in 2020 to 11 per 100,000, comparable to rates in Sudan and Iraq. In contrast, the Jewish community’s murder rate stood at approximately 0.6 per 100,000.

Critics point to the introduction of figures like Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich into government as contributing factors to the increase in violence. Analysts and experts have expressed concerns that the current administration is not doing enough to address the root causes of the violence.

The Israeli police force has only 10 stations in Palestinian-majority areas, compared to standard policing stations in Jewish-majority areas. The government’s recent decision to cut funding for an economic development program for Palestinian communities by $68.5 million was met with criticism from advocacy groups, who argue that more funding is needed for the police.

Palestinian citizens of Israel make up around 21% of the country’s population and are often concentrated in separate towns and villages from Israeli Jews. They face chronic underinvestment and economic disparities compared to Jewish communities.
